07MarU.S. Military Bans Google Mapping Team

Last year’s launch of Google’s Street View which gives you a driver’s seat view of actual streets, made all of us a little freaked out about the prospects of our dwindling privacy. Now, the U.S. military is similarly concerned, and has banned Google from mapping out the streets of its military bases.

The move will mean that Google’s so-called Googlemobile, a roving van that takes 360-degree images of the streets for use on the site, will be stopped at the gates of any base.

Defense officials are deeply concerned about the possibility of three-dimensional panoramic images of security-sensitive areas like military bases being used by vested interests, anti-social elements, in general all ‘enemies’ of the US. The Pentagon has lost no time in sending orders to all US military bases that no filming of military facilities will be permitted, especially not by civilians.

Google officials have reportedly admitted that they mistakenly recorded videos of the military base Fort Sam Houston in Texas. They’re believed to have now removed the videos from the Web site.
